The Externsteine are a distinctive rock formation situated in the Teutoburger Wald, not far from Detmold. They are a unique series of sandstone columns up to forty meters tall, forming a wall several hundreds of meters long. The series of columns rise from the woddded hills and appear to be the only stone formations in the area. The Knickenhagena nnd Barenstein are sililar rocks on either side and only visible as perpindicular ribs along the northern flanks of the Externsteine.
